Intrinsic Motivation for Students using Classroom Management Techniques
What process of classroom management can be used to inspire intrinsic motivation in elementary school students?
During my time in the school year of 2016-17 I had the unique opportunity to see four different elementary school classrooms within the same school. It was a wonderfully eye opening but also perplexing. Each classroom implemented unique classroom management techniques including student manipulated behavior trackers, student-earned classroom currency, verbal warnings, verbal praising, table points, whole class points, extrinsic rewards, and verbal cues to pay attention. The main concern I feel with all of this is how teachers can inspire students towards intrinsic motivations rather than relying upon verbal cues and rewards to inspire them to listen so learning can occur. There may be no good answers to these concerns, but these concerns should be considered and constant attempts should be made to improve intrinsic motivation in students so we can inspire more learning motivated students within the classroom, no matter the age of the student.
